Monday you can Fall Apart
WCDB-Boxing Day Extravaganza XXXIII

Followers of the show might have caught my top ten albums of 2011 list last week, which will be compiled and uploaded to my website in the near future. Those who missed the list can catch it featured in WCDB’s Airwaves magazine due out in January, which will include other CDBers’ lists from multiple departments. I wish the station luck in resurrecting the magazine, which has been out of print since the early 1990s. It was a project we all danced around and eventually abandoned while I was an undergrad. Their plan is to work on something more substantial than a flyer, and release it every semester. So, twice per calendar year.

With the “print media is DEAD” discussion that cut lake a razor at weekly station meetings, my idea was a compromise: to make a poster of a band, with a photograph from the photo club next door. A nice 36” x 48”  with a full station schedule on the reverse. If we needed money for a full color job, we could section off part of the band photo side with ads for local businesses. (Credit where it’s due… I saw that WCDB used to do Exactly that in the mid-80s with great success.) Unfortunately, 2007 was not my year as the station underwent Asbestos renovation and we disappeared for a while, only to re-emerge with a whole new set of binary operators and an Intel processor. We concentrated on moving ack in and using the new space as effectively as possible. The idea was relegated to the wall of the Atrium display cabinet. If they can make it work, use the chosen media effectively, and maybe get a little exposure with it in the end, maybe it can be the return of a much-needed tradition, which is really something to admire.

Anyway, I do hope you’ll be burning all your wrapping paper in your basement and blast my radio show, which is semi-boxing day themed and will be on your radio at 90.9 FM from noon to two PM. MAKE IT REALLY REAL and tune it in. Hope you have a great New year and I’ll be conveniently back on January second, 2012. (That was soorta fun to type! 2012 is looking fantastic already! 2012! 2012!2012!2012! Sorry.
