I was lucky enough to attend a brilliant basement show last night in Albany, curated by the local Benson indie collective and WCDB. Julian Koster of Neutral Milk Hotel (& Music Tapes) performed lovely Christmas selections with singing saws and a trombone. It was ethereal to say the least; the timbre of a saw played with a violin bow is unsettling only to the point of introspection and a reminder that this will be a Christmas past. Here is a photo I took of their playing along with a reel-to-reel that featured an old man singing a 16 bar hymnal; they played along to this. If anyone knows the name of the song or the singer here let me know!!
